Channelling old-colonial charm and surrounded by tropical gardens, Anantara has bagged the best spot in Hoi An, set on the banks of the picturesque Thu Bon River, just a short stroll from the ancient streets and colourful architecture of arguably Vietnam’s most beguiling town.

Location

It’s a 45-minute drive from Danang Airport and a three-hour drive over the scenic Hai Van pass from the imperial city of Hue. Its riverside setting is just a five-minute walk from the tempting shops, markets, eateries and historic buildings of Hoi An’s Unesco-protected old quarter, and a leisurely 20-minute cycle to the beach.

Style and Character

Designed in French colonial style with terracotta-tiled rooftops and open walkways, rooms and suites are spread over two- and three-storey pastel-coloured buildings scattered around the lush gardens. By day it’s the perfect place to escape the city hubbub, sit back and watch the ebb and flow of river life. At night, trees filled with twinkling lanterns give it a romantic air.

Service and Facilities

The staff are friendly and efficient and there’s a host of daily activities on offer, from complimentary bicycles and yoga classes, to lantern-making and sunset cruises. The concierge can arrange a visit to the ancient My Son Sanctuary, or recommend a tailor where you can get a designer outfit whipped up for a fraction of the price.

After a hard day’s sightseeing, the square, palm-fringed pool is the perfect place to relax. Or you can learn to rustle up classic Vietnamese dishes on a Spice Spoons private cooking class. The spa also makes the most of local ingredients in treatments such as the Vietnamese Green Tea and Salt Body Scrub.

Rooms

Split-level rooms and suites are spacious, bright and uncluttered, decked out in neutral tones, with tiled floors and gleaming wood furniture. A few steps and a balustrade separate the living area from the bedroom, where a queen-sized bed comes clad in crisp, white linens, with silk cushions and lamp shades adding pops of colour.

The large bathrooms have mosaic-tiled showers – suites have sunken tubs – and Elemis lotions and potions. And they all have al fresco lounging space, overlooking the river or garden.

Food and Drink

There’s no shortage of dining options. An expansive buffet breakfast is served at first-floor Lanterns, where you can linger at a river-view table over top-notch patisseries, freshly squeezed juice, cold cuts and eggs-to-order, or a steaming bowl of Vietnamese Pho.

There are light bites, such as spring rolls, salads and pizza, at the poolside Reflections bar or high tea at the Hoi An Riverside Restaurant. Here the dinner menu focuses on local dishes, such as the legendary cao lau noodles, alongside steak and seafood. It makes the perfect place for a happy hour cocktail.
